Spiegelberg family papers, 1854-1936.

Summary: Collection consists of the private and business papers of the Spiegelberg family and of their business, Spiegelberg Bros. (1854- 1936). Levi Speigelberg's naturalization papers include a photoprint of a certificate that is bordered with three types of scrip issued by Spiegelberg Bros. The Spiegelberg family papers include photocopies of a promise of safe passage issued to Lehman Spiegelberg from the U.S. Army dated Socorro, New Mexico 1862 and Flora Spiegelberg's article about her experiences on the Santa Fe Trail and life in Santa Fe in the latter part of the 19th century (1937). Correspondence is between Flora Spiegelberg and Hester Jones, Curator of History at the Museum of New Mexico, and pertains to the Spiegelberg family papers. Also included are a list of "bad accounts" held by Spiegelberg Bros. (1881), and a letter from the Territory of New Mexico Office of Solicitor General concerning licenses upon which collectors are entitled to commissions (1881).

Jacob Spiegelberg established a mercantile business in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1846. This became Spiegelberg Bros., one of the largest wholesale operators in the Southwest in the latter part of the 19th century.
